Safe weight loss comes down to a few different factors. How old are you? What is your level of physical activity? What gender are you? These factors affect everyone differently and are the reason we all need to go at our own pace. 

So what’s a good rule of thumb? Anywhere between one-to-two and four-to-eight pounds a week. That works out to about 5-10% of your total body weight in a week. 

One important thing to keep in mind is that losing 5-to-10 pounds in the first week isn’t uncommon, but this number will change and you should not expect them to continue. As this number slows down, it’s important not to get discouraged.

How Much Loss Is Too Much?

As we mentioned, it’s pretty common to lose a larger amount of weight in the initial period of weight control. Losing more than 10 pounds within a month is extremely unlikely if you’re not enrolled in some medically supervised weight loss program. Always remember: if you lose too much weight too soon, your body will respond by slowing down your metabolism, increasing hunger hormones, and burning less fat while exercising. 

And all of that takes a backseat to an even more important problem: your muscle mass and physical health. Lose too much weight, and you run the risk of severely damaging your metabolism. Strength training helps in this regard, giving you the lean muscle mass you need to stay healthy. This is why quick weight loss therapies are usually not recommended.

Set Goals

When you have realistic goals, you have a mark to hit and an idea of when you’ve succeeded.  Track your weight-loss progress with an app like MyFitnessPal, plan out your meals, and make an appointment to exercise that you can not break. This will keep you in line and make sure you don’t overdo it.

Prepare For Failures

Weight loss is hard. If it wasn’t, everyone would do it. There will be times when you lose more weight than you’d expected. Other times, you’ll only lose a few pounds. Accepting that this will happen is part of a healthy approach to safe weight loss. 

Pay Attention To What Your Body Is Telling You

Learning to “listen” to your body is a step in the direction of safe weight loss. Lifestyle changes like this are a big deal, and being hungry is obviously normal. Keep in mind, though, that you should never feel obsessively hungry. What’s important is, in these situations, is to respond to hunger pangs with healthy food choices.
