Intermittent Fasting Mistakes: Three More Everybody Makes
There’s been a lot of great research into the benefits of an intermittent fasting lifestyle in recent years. Beyond “just” weight loss, it’s been shown to boost brain health, ease depression, and lower cholesterol. And, with so much buzz around this diet, the number of people adopting it is on the rise every day.
But what are some mistakes you could make while fasting? We’ve already looked at three of the biggest ones, but there were so many to choose from, we decided to bring you three more!
Ready to get started? Good – let’s go!
“Breaking Your Fast With Junk Food”
The sad truth about intermittent fasting is that it tends to focus more on when to consume food, rather than the nutritional quality of what you’re actually eating. Whether you’re eating normally or fasting, you still have the same essential nutrition requirements. Stick to processed foods instead of the kinds of whole foods you know make up a balanced diet, and all the intermittent fasting in the world won’t help you reach your health goals.
Instead of eating whatever you feel like and just hoping for the best, gradually fire up a slow diet change that incorporates. You’ll find it more sustainable to work it in slowly, especially because you won’t have to change everything all at once.
The concept of exercise may seem unimportant during a heavy fasting period, especially if you’ve always had a snack right before getting to hard work. The human body stores a lot more energy in its fat than we give it credit for, and for the most part we can work out as we normally would quite safely.
It’s always best to consult your doctor first, but exercise can be completely safe during a fast. Start by trying your standard exercise routine, and if you need to, ratchet the physicality of it down to simple daily walking. Lastly, If you can follow up your exercise with a protein-rich meal, you can speed up your muscle building while staying completely on track with your fast.
“Abandoning Ship For Fasting”
When you get into a new, healthy lifestyle that shows results, it can be easy to neglect the rest of your life. Just because you’re fasting doesn’t mean you can’t have dinner with a friend, or you that you have to skip birthday parties with your loved ones. Remember, you’re not a robot, and you need a little fun in your life to keep you interested, so enjoy the good things in moderation too.
Make plans with your friends. Enjoy socializing and, if you need to, adjust the clock one or two days to help compensate. Work hard not to make it a habit, but remember that without a balance, you’re far more likely to slip back into bad dieting habits.
Making completely avoidable fasting mistakes or even just eating poorly is to be expected, no matter how disciplined you are. Still, even with that said, what’s important is knowing what the mistakes are ahead of time, so you can avoid them.
